The Pistons played the Celtics on Tuesday night in Detroit, and Villaneuva and Garnett were both issued technical fouls after a minor confrontation late in the game.
Villanueva has dealt with jokes about his appearance for years, as this 2006 SI.com article by Andrew Lawrence makes clear. Villanueva suffers from "a mysterious skin disease known as alopecia universalis," writes Lawrence, "which would slowly make him hairless."
NBA players have had their Twitter accounts hacked in the past, most memorably Celtics guard Ray Allen, whose account had explicit messages posted on it. It's not immediately clear whether Villanueva was posting the messages or if his account was hacked, although shortly before the Garnett-related tweets were posted, the following message was posted: "Just landed in the ATL, we must win tomorrow, we will turn this around, I'm a believer."
The Pistons, who are one of only two teams in the league that are 0-4 on the season, along with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Clippers, play the Hawks in Atlanta on Wednesday night.
Update (Wednesday): ESPN's Justin Verrier confirms that the tweets were written by Villanueva himself.

A late-night rant about Boston Celtics power forward Kevin Garnett appeared on the Twitter account of Detroit Pistons forward Charlie Villanueva. Posted by Ben Golliver.
Between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. on Wednesday morning, multiple messages appeared on the Twitter feed of Detroit Pistons forward Charlie Villanueva, who goes by @CV31 on the social networking site. Villanueva is a regular Twitter user, but these messages were different, as they were extremely negative and directed anger and frustration at Boston Celtics power forward Kevin Garnett.
A first message read, "KG talks alot of crap, he's prob never been in a fight, I would love to get in a ring with him, I will expose him." Shortly thereafter, two additional messages appeared on the account, "KG called me a cancer patient, I'm pissed because, u know how many people died from cancer, and he's tossing it like it's a joke ... I wouldn't even trip about that, but a cancer patient, I know way 2 many people who passed away from it, and I have a special place for those."
Screenshots of the tweets are visible below.

Charlie Villanueva Twitter rant on Kevin GarnettIt's alopecia totalis and Bob, we don't cross personal lines in hockey. Read Kerry Frasers new book entitled final call. He describes the only 2 times he dealt with personal lines crossed with Nash and Lemieux. Tyson and Claude that is. I've played over 1500 games at various levels and can tell you hockey is like no other sport when it comes to crossing personal lines. He has a disease, alopoecia is more than a baldness issue, it's a white blood cell issue too. You don't go there. In hockey, he'd have a target on him for years to come, and if you play you'll know what I'm talking about. He'd get his ass handed to him many times over. Basketball players have it too easy.

Charlie Villanueva Twitter rant on Kevin GarnettIt's not cancer, it some type of baldness issue. I am familiar with hockey, I play it, I watch it, there's all kinds of "codes" that players routinely break, there's no moral superiority, plenty of punks in all sports.

Charlie Villanueva Twitter rant on Kevin GarnettIt's "classless". but man, could we get over the PC stuff already. It's a competitive activity, that kind of talk goes on in all sports at every level of play. My God the only things we're focused on these days is "offensive speech" and brett favre's dick.

Charlie Villanueva Twitter rant on Kevin GarnettI can't stand KG. Has everyone noticed he pushes others players around from behind but as soon as someone gets in his face he has little fight left? My favorite player would be the first one to just knock him out. I would even send that player money for his fine.

Charlie Villanueva Twitter rant on Kevin GarnettI absolutely believe KG that dumb, uneducated puke said that. It only makes sense as Charlie V has alopecia totalis and resembles an individual going through radiation treatment. KG has shown time and time again that he's a classless idiot. It's one thing to trash talk, which can be effective if done right, it's another thing to cross lines. KG isn't smart enough to draw a line nevermind stay behind one so I'm not surprised. Get yourself ready for bankruptcy two years after retirement KG cause you're a dumb bag of turd.

Charlie Villanueva Twitter rant on Kevin GarnettAs a Celtic fan, I find this extremely classless by KG if it's true. However, so far it's one man's word against another. No one else apparently heard this, or at least they're not coming forward. Villanueva didn't mention it to anyone until 2am on a Twitter account? If he is as upset as claims to be, he would have said something earlier or at least confronted KG. Does this deserve a suspension? No. Trash talking goes on all of the time & even though this goes over the line, a tech was never called, no one made reference to it during the game & it's still one man's word against another.
