The Portland Trail Blazers announced that center Greg Oden will undergo microfracture on his left knee. Posted by Ben Gollivergreg-oden-knee

The Portland Trail Blazers announced in a press release to the media Wednesday night that oft-injured center Greg Oden will undergo microfracture surgery on his left knee. The surgery will end Oden's 2010-2011 season before it began.
Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden will undergo microfracture surgery on his left knee Friday and will miss the remainder of the 2010-11 season, the Trail Blazers announced this evening.
Dr. Richard Steadman will perform the surgery with assistance from Trail Blazers orthopedic surgeon Dr. Don Roberts at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colo.   Oden, 22, has been sidelined since fracturing his left patella in a Dec. 5, 2009, game vs. Houston. A recent MRI showed damaged cartilage to the surface of his femur, and his current injury is unrelated to the fractured left patella.   Oden previously underwent microfracture surgery on his right knee Sept. 13, 2007.
Oden has played just 82 games over the course of his 3-year NBA career and he is set to become a restricted free agent at the end of this season after not receiving a contract extension this fall.  Oden was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft, and has been continually compared to No. 2 overall pick Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder, who has gone on to superstar status while Oden has struggled to stay healthy enough to reach the court.

Greg Oden to undergo microfracture surgery

I think Oden's real age is 72.  That might explain why he is so injury prone. Geezer.

I disagree. You have to play 100 games to qualify as a bust. Too bad for Oden and the NBA.

Greg Oden to undergo microfracture surgery

After his last microfracture surgery, I wrote a post about how Oden should trade one of his eyes for the Wisdom of the Ages, wherein would lie divine knowledge on how to avoid getting injured in the future (Oden-- get it?). I'm not one to toot my own horn, but *beep beep*. Poor Greg should have taken my advice. Now instead of missing one eye, he's virtually missing two legs. Looks like it's time to retire to his throne in Valhalla. And if I can think of any more Norse mythology jokes, I'll be sure to follow up later.

Greg Oden to undergo microfracture surgery

Calling Oden a bust right now is premature.  He is 22 years old and is very talented, yes, microfracture surgery is not a sure thing that the kid will come back from, but right now is not the time to say his career is over or he was not worthy of a #1 pick.

Oden worked his butt of to get back this year and his trainer looked like he was almost in tears when word came out of the new injury, so that tells me everyone thought he was back, and you have to believe with that work ethic, he will make it back again.

Good luck Greg.

No empathy at all, lol?  He's actually probably going to lose out on a ton of money (I read between $80-90 million) because the Blazers can opt out of his contract after this season.  I actually feel bad for him.  It's not like he's choosing not to play.  How badly do you think the Trailblazers management would like a re-do on that 2007 draft.  It must keep them up at night constantly.

But he still gets to keep all that money right? Boy, what a lucky guy. Two seasons paid for and hardly had to work at it at all.

I say cut off the left leg. He will still have two legs to stand on, and bonus, one leg would be free from potential knee injuries!!

The NBA should have a 'buyout' clause in the next collective bargaining agreement.  I don't want to deny Oden some compensation for his injury time but I think it should be something along the lines of a couple million a year.  It is so stupid for teams to have all that money locked up in players who can't play.  The only way the teams can pay their debts is raising prices.  Would it be that bad if a guy who misses a couple of years on his contract due to injury gets $2,000,000 to sit?
