The NBA has announced that Philadelphia 76ers forward Elton Brandon has been suspended for one game for a flagrant foul. Posted by Ben Golliver The NBA sent out a memo this afternoon suspending Philadelphia 76ers forward Elton Brand for one game for a hard foul he put on Washington Wizards center JaVale McGee during a game Tuesday night. During the game, the foul was ruled a Flagrant Foul Two for being "unnecessary and excessive" and resulted in Brand's ejection. Brand will serve the suspension tonight as the 76ers face the Raptors in Toronto. Here's the release.
Elton Brand of the Philadelphia 76er’s has been suspended one game without pay for his Flagrant Foul, Penalty Two against JaValle McGee of the Washington Wizards, it was announced today by Stu Jackson, NBA Executive Vice President Basketball Operations.
The incident, in which Brand made contact by shoving McGee during a layup attempt and was ejected following the Flagrant Foul, Penalty Two call, occurred with 3:32 remaining in the 4th period of the 76er’s 116-114 overtime loss to the Washington Wizards at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C.
Here's a video of the play, courtesy of YouTuber user thehoopscene. As you can see, McGee is wide open in the paint when he receives a pass from point guard John Wall. He goes to dunk the ball with his right hand, and Brand rotates over late, using both arms to shove McGee in the chest. McGee finishes the dunk and crashes to the floor, and Brand was immediately ejected by official Tony Brothers. While laying on the floor, McGee smiled and briefly waved goodbye to Brand.

Elton Brand suspended 1 game for flagrant foul 2

Shock is the only emotion I retain after watching this video.  Congratulations to the NBA on getting this right and suspending Elton Brand.  McGee has a vertical jump of 32.5", and at 7' it is nothing short of scary to put him on his back in mid air.  The sixers will be without Brand for a game, JaVale McGee made that basket, and the Legue sent a clear message that this sort of incident is not NBA basketball.  Instead of giving Brand further attention surrounding this incident, I think it would be appropriate to recognize how gifted the Washington Wizards Center is and think about the talent level he could reach in the next few years.  He and John Wall will be good reason for excitement in Washington.  Watching this video for a Wizards fan is to watch the future flash before your eyes.  McGee had an amazing finish on the play.  Tony Brothers gets credit for an instant ejection.  Elton Brand has some thinking to do.

Elton Brand suspended 1 game for flagrant foul 2

This play was a little different than a MLB plunking in that normally there is a specific target; if Albert Pujols is plunked purposefully by the Phillies you can take it to the bank that Ryan Howard (or some other guy with a hot bat that day) will get a free trip to first base as well. I don't believe that Brand was told to commit this foul, but there have been coaches who have a "no lay-up" rule and others who want an "aggressive" attempt made to block the shot. The late 80's Pistons bordered on the ridiculous with what they did in the playoffs. Jordan used to get hammered constantly when he drove to the basket. I agree with a suspension in this case because Brand made no attempt on the ball and didn't even jump. Also, I am somewhat surprised there wasn't a fight. If this type of foul is always as a one-game suspension, maybe the game will get cleaned up a little. Again, I am going to assume that Brand wishes he had made a play on the ball instead of pushing him.

The bye-bye wave was classic.

Elton Brand suspended 1 game for flagrant foul 2

I watched the whole game.  Brand's foul had nothing to do with the coach or the player.  It is because he is one of the few real "Pros" on the team and it was a result of his frustration with the losing and all the non-learning going on by the young guys.  As far as Collins, he is terrible.  What he his teaching ain't sinking in.  There is no progress being made by this team.  They can't run a play, not even a Pick and roll, its sad really.  If you don't believe it start watching tonight. end of the 1st and the Raptors are winning 33-16 and shooting 65%.  This is a team in total dissarray and accepting of losing.  There can't be moral victories in Pro ball, there can't be well we gave it a good effort I'm proud of you guys.  This is going to get ugly, prediction Raptors win 120-60 and shoot 70% from the field. WOW its a horrific display by pro athletes.

I hear what you're saying and I can understand why you might suspect the coach is behind this; after all, baseball managers will sometimes ask a pitcher to dust someone off in a game.  However, Collins is a classy guy who respects the game and he is more interested in getting his 3-11 team to play the game the right way, rather than flagrantly try to hurt someone.  Especially since this came during a crucial point late in the game when teams can ill-afford to give up points and a posession.  It was a dumb play by Brand who was trying to give a hard foul to stop an otherwise sure basket and nothing more.  I am not minimizing the fact that the other player could have been badly hurt on the play, I just don't see anything premeditated about it-it was just a read and react kind of play in which the player made a bad split second decision.

The difference between this being a good, hard foul to force a guy to shoot free throws was a split second.  I don't see what your basis for assuming coaches are ordering flagrant fouls is, but I'm interested if you've got more to add.  Yeah, Brand deserved the flagrant, but having been on both ends of hard fouls, it doesn't look like there was any intend other than to keep the guy from scoring.  There are much better ways to take a guy out when he's in the air if you're trying to hurt him.  Personally, I don't think it warrants a game suspension, but I think that's the rule when you get a Flagrant 2.

I am going to assume that coaches are telling players to commit these ignorant fouls the same way baseball managers order up plunkings. I thought better of Brand before watching this. How many players stand up to their coaches and tell them they won't play dirty because they want to have a reputation as a respectable player? Dude could've easily had a broken tailbone or worse, and I don't think Brand wants to be the guy who caused that type of thing.
